Dev Update #4
almost 3 years ago – Fri, Apr 07, 2023 at 08:09:56 AM

Hello Travelers,

The time has come for a new dev update! Before we let you know what we’ve been working on this past month, we have a quick note. As time goes on, dev updates will begin to reveal some aspects of the game: concepts, cosmetics, game mechanics… Do proceed with caution if you would like your Sally experience to be completely unspoiled.

Sally Layout

What’s in a giant, frog-shaped vessel? We’ve been studying the question. The Sally’s layout directly informs which game mechanics will happen aboard the ship. We can’t have the kitchen 4 stories away from the garden if we want to maximize player comfort! Our art team drafted up architectural plans of the ship, and gave our game designers an extensive tour. Everyone on board now has a clear idea of which areas can serve which purposes, and therefore, the rooms can begin to take form.

Here’s a sneak peek of one of the work-in-progress areas. Can you guess what this will be?

A 3D model of an area in greyscale. Stairs are going down to a mezzanine floor, surrounded by delicate guard rails. The center of the room is open, showing the empty floor below. Columns support the entire area, and a row of embellishments adorn the concave ceiling.

Imagine this mezzanine filled with comfy chair, bookcases and books: you’ve just stepped into what will be the Sally’s library.

Crewmates on the move

This year, our animation tools have been reviewed to allow for a a more efficient workflow. Following that change, our animators have reworked the base of Sally’s crewmates characters. Their mesh, which is basically a tightly-fitted net that encompasses the entire character, is being finely tuned. This work ensures that with every movement, their mesh mimics human reality.

The shape of a character seemingly saying hello is repeated four times: 1 in its mesh form; 2, in its mesh form with controllers; 3, in its 3d form without textures; 4, in its 3d form with controllers.
A character in their mesh form and 3D form, both with and without the controllers used to animate them.

New tools have also been programmed to make the characters’ bones interact together. For example, with these new features, not only will our animators be able to move several fingers at a time instead of painstackingly adjusting every phalange; they’ll also be capable of making multiple adjustments on different clusters of bones, resulting in complex movements that feel right. Implementing these modular tools will greatly facilitate the animation process for all moving things in Sally - characters and animals alike!

Even more good news: these tools can be used directly in the game engine! Should we need to make a crewmember pet a chibison, all necessary elements of that scene can be added whilst the animation is being created. This means that it’s easier to adapt the character’s movements to the chibisons’ fur - maximizing everyone’s enjoyment.

Stew time

Can you say cozy game without a cooking element? Not in Sally! Our designers have started working on specific game mechanics, and the cooking mini-game is first on the list. There’s bread on the cutting board, as the French expression goes, which means there’s plenty of work to be done. We won’t share anything at this stage, but let’s just say that we’ve been cutting up some carrots, and we’re pretty excited about what’s to come.

A Sally character is hunched over a table, mixing some kind of mixture with a wooden spoon. On the table is a checkered tablecloth, a carrot, wooden utensils and a white container. The character is in the middle of a spacious, blue-tiled kitchen. A brick oven and a grinding device preside over the scene, surrounded by bags of flours, loaves of bread, clay pots and wooden barrels.

That’s it for now, travelers. See you next month! If you’re interested in even more Sally development details, head over to our Discord server, where you’ll be fed (emoji) cookies and monthly updates.

Dev Update #3
about 3 years ago – Fri, Mar 10, 2023 at 10:07:59 AM

Hello, Travelers!

There’s a nice feeling of renewal in the air - birds are chirping, spring is just around the corner, and all members of Lucid Tales are now working on Sally full-time!

Sit down for a good cup of tea, and we’ll let you know what we’ve been working on.

A white set of garden table and chairs is on a pretty platform near a pond with water lilies . On the table is a delicate pale blue tablecloth and a quaint tea pot, along with three tea cups and saucers. The platform is surrounded by purple and red flowers, a bush and a birch tree

New Sally Assets

New furniture items are appearing in the game! It takes a lot of objects to create a world, and our art team has been working hard to add more materials, textures and assets in Sally. Chairs, tables, rugs, couches, and lamps have been added to the roster! The cute garden furniture and tea set pictured here have also been created this month.

Speaking of tea, this week, we’re asking our Discord community what kind of tea they’d like to see in the game. Head on over to Sally’s Crew if you want to be part of the conversation!

Research & Development

As we’re hopping onto the next part of creating Sally, we’re in a big planning phase. We’ve been assessing our workflow and development needs; making sure we can tackle every task that come our way with the appropriate tools. There’s not much we can share on that front, unfortunately, but it’s great news: there’s now a real synergy between our processes, and every department has a very clear game plan.

Sky Shenanigans

In our last update, we mentioned the creation of an island editor, which will allow us to generate fleets of floating islands. This month, we’ve been focussing on making these islands move. No worries now, we won’t have you chasing them like it’s an island rodeo! We’re only making sure that their movement feels natural and in tune with their surroundings.

Our environmental lighting has also been reviewed. Finding that right shade and brightness is important to set the perfect scene. Whether you’re aboard the Sally or exploring an island, we want you to feel like the golden hour is a magical moment you can peacefully enjoy.

Thank you for being with us, travelers. Our next update will mark the first of many more to come where all of our time is devoted to Sally. We couldn’t be more excited to share future developments with you all!

Your grateful Sally team,

Lucid Tales

Dev Update #2
about 3 years ago – Tue, Feb 07, 2023 at 10:43:09 AM

Hello Travelers,

Here is your second Sally dev update!

March 1st is outlined in a calendar, with the words "Full-time Sally dev!!". The calendar sits on a table, surrounded by a reptile and amphibian notebook, a blue pen, a mushroom pencil case, and a felted Lucid Tales flame.

Full-time Sally development is upon us

There’s now less than a month left before everyone at Lucid Tales starts working full-time on Sally! As we all eagerly wait for March 1st, we have been prepping tools to make the switch to full-time development as efficient as possible. Having a smooth workflow is paramount for a project of Sally’s scale, and we’re making sure we are prepared for the task.

New year, new game engine

In the last update, we mentioned we are transitioning Sally’s project from Unreal 4 to Unreal 5. We’re pleased to announce that the transition is now mostly complete! As time progresses, our technical director will keep coding plugins for the engine, giving us access to new key features that best serves our development needs.

Floating Islands

One of the key design aspect of Sally is that every game will be entirely unique. Following this philosophy, the floating islands will be randomly-generated. Simply put, the islands you’ll get to explore in your game will be different than the ones explored by other players in theirs.

This past month, we have been working on the first step: creating an island editor. The first blueprint of our Sally archipelago, if you will. This will be the base layer upon which all future biomes and islands will be built!

With the Switch stretch goal unlocked, we’re keeping in mind that the game must run smoothly on Nintendo’s platform. New game aspects, such as our island editor, are being optimized as we go. This extra step will definitely save us time in the long run. Speaking of time: it is now a principle that exists! Sally now has its own cycle of day and night.

Sally Discord Server

New ways to interact on the Sally Discord server will be spawning at the beginning of March. Don’t hesitate to join the wholesome folks who make this community so welcoming and special. We have chibison emojis, too!

A button with Discord's logo reads "Join our Discord Community"

The Discord title rollout is still underway for all backers, and you can get yours by filling in this form. If you’ve already sent us your form but have yet to receive your role, please send us a direct message on Kickstarter so we can swiftly confirm your information.

That’s it for now, folks; see you next month!

Dev Update #1
about 3 years ago – Mon, Jan 09, 2023 at 10:19:44 AM

Hello Travelers!

First and foremost, happy new year 2023 to everyone! We hope the past couple of weeks have been equally full of fun times and good rest. ❤️

The Lucid Tales team is now back to work after a 2-week holiday break, and we are over the moon. Starting this new year knowing that thanks to all of you, it will be spent developing Sally is quite amazing!

Keeping you in the loop

From now on, we’ll be keeping in touch every month through Kickstarter updates. We can’t wait to make this project grow, and we’re so excited to share the progress with you! All important information will be communicated through Kickstarter. Since we do not want to overburden anyone’s inbox, we will also have some smaller informal updates via the Sally Discord server. Sally news enthusiasts, feel free to join!

Latest Sally developments

Ever since the Kickstarter campaign ended, part of our team has been working on a video game development contract. This ensured that our small worker coop could stay afloat whilst we gauged the audience’s interest for Sally through crowdfunding. You know how that story ends - you all made our dreams come true! With the funding received through Kickstarter, all of Lucid Tales will be devoted to Sally full-time starting March 1st. We cannot overstate how incredibly excited we are!

But fear not - Sally has been in our minds and in our schedules ever since the campaign ended. We’re currently transitioning the project from Unreal 4 to Unreal 5, meaning that we will have access to better development tools to make the game. We can safely say we’ve all been looking forward to that transition - our technical director maybe even more so!

Our animation tools are also getting reviewed. We’re streamlining our process to bring more efficiency to our workflow. The structures of Sally’s characters and assets are being evaluated and fine-tuned so our animators can work their magic more easily. In other words, we are finding better ways to give everything in the game the bones they need (yes, things need bones), and to make them move.

Some post-Kickstarter tasks have also been on our to-do list. There has been strong demand for Kickstarter items to be made available to backers through the pledge manager. Good news: everything is in the works to make that happen! As soon as the manager is online, you’ll be able to add to your pledge some Kickstarter rewards you maybe missed out on during the campaign.

Discord Roles

Speaking of rewards, the Discord title rollout has also been underway. As a reminder, everyone who backed the Kickstarter gets a special role in the Sally Discord server that makes their name appear in a different color. Here are the steps to redeem yours:

We are currently up-to-date with the role distribution. If you have filled in the form but haven’t received your role yet, we might need more information from you. Please send us a direct message on Kickstarter so we can confirm the email address associated with your pledge and swiftly give your Sally Discord username the fun color it deserves.

Well travelers, those were the news for this first dev update. Again, a wonderful and promising year 2023 to all - and thank you for making ours so much more exciting! See you next month!

Your devoted Sally team,

Lucid Tales
